Contemporaneously with the Milanese administration's decision to save the castle at the end of the 1800s, a project for the Sempione Park was also instituted. The town planning scheme of 1889, signed by the architect Cesare Beruto, set aside a large area for the park. The design is the work of Emilio Alemagna, who between 1890 and 1893 created an English romantic garden with gentle artificial slopes, groves in imitation of the open countryside, waterways and broad paths for carriages. The paths had the purpose of symbolically linking the Milan of the Sforzas with that of Napoleon, by connecting the Castle with the Arena and the 19th century arch. Over the years the 47 hectares of park have been embellished with a multitude of artworks.
